Martha Spencer & Lucas Pasley - Nancy Blevins
Martha and Lucas played the first night of their February 2025 UK trip at the Green Note Club in London. Prior to going on stage we talked about a recent release that her brother Kilby had put together for the Field Recorders Collective label of a legend in their home area Muncy Gaultney. This led to other legends from the area Albert Hash (uncle of Martha & Kilby), G B Grayson and Henry Whitter all dealt with in Josh Beckworth's Grayson & Whitter biography. Josh had finally been able to make the family connection between Albert Hash and fiddle player Nancy Blevins another local legend after whom the tune had been named. Prior to this some people had doubted Albert's claim. Our discussion prompted Martha to play the tune.

April 12th 2024, just looking through some videos in my library and notice that it is six years to the day that Joe and April willingly allowed me to video their performance at Cecil Sharp House in London and OK'd it for me to post the results here. This is a really nice performance of the Wade and Julia Mainer song which I believe is well worth adding here.

This track was digitised from a cassette issued on the now defunct Marimac label No. 9018. It was recorded, mastered and edited by Andy Cahan in 1988. I don’t believe it has ever been re-issued. Carlie tells of his start on the banjo before Andy Joins him on fiddle and vocals. The photograph by Sylvia Pitcher was taken at Mount Airy, N.C. in 1988.

In 1982 on one of our visits with Red Wilson near Bakersville, North Carolina he and his wife Marie who were responsible for introducing us to various musicians of the area suggested that we should visit Garrett Arrwood and his wife Nora at their home at Pigeon Roost, Green Mountain. Garrett was a fiddle maker and he was the man to go to if you wanted a good bow. Norah his wife also made beauti...

In 1980 English folk music collector and researcher Mike Yates was on one of his collecting trips in the Appalachians. While in North Carolina he visited Walt Davis at his home in Black Mountain. The Legends of Jazz was a group of veteran musicians put together in the 1970‘s by an Englishman Barry Martyn who had played drums in a number of groups in the U.K. before emigrating to the U.S.A. I believe he lived for a while in New Orleans and eventually settled in L.A. The vinyl album from which this track comes was issued by Crescent Productions in Los Angeles and was recorded in Hollywood...

First saw them on a documentary some years ago and few years searching managed to buy a cd by them.Great stuff.
Field Recorders Collective issued a DVD. they may still have copies. Well worth checking out
@ Thanks for that will check it out.Love all types of traditional music not least of all old time American-saw Jean Ritchie once-wonderful.
Just one of the best in his day even to this day.
As a Calhoun, and a fiddler, I heartily approve of this song!

Outstanding!
Love uncle Dave ❤️
Very cool
That's awesome. Love to listen to Enoch
♡♡♡♡
Great material - Thank You for the backstories!
jst curious... was the lost Indian evr found?
Ole red cap as Benton would say.
Thanks for posting. I have one of their LPs, love their stuff.
My grandfather and great Uncle, my Mom and my Dad. Little known fact is that my brother Chris Birchfield also played guitar sometimes on recordings.
Awesome! Real mountain people, real mountain music!!
Cordell takes understated appreciation to a whole new level
That gruff old man's approval shines brighter and truer than all of today's gratuitous participation trophies.
@ yip, I don’t disagree with you there
Music starts around 2:20 - great tune by Etta Baker
I am not sure if Etta claimed to have originated this piece. Dave Stacey learned it from the recording made by Lacey Phillips who from memory I believe was married to Etta's sister Cora. There is a version on you tube where Etta plays it accompanied by her sister Cora Phillips playing guitar.
This is really cool. Carlie Marion is something of an unsung musician in our area so it was really interesting to hear him talking about his experiences learning the banjo. He played often with my grandpa Verlen Clifton and I know he used to play banjo with the Smokey Valley Boys for a time. Be interesting to hear anything else from that tape.
The banjo player really sings!
Perhaps you haven't noticed the fact that this track features dancing by two members of the group. If you want to hear banjo player Emily Spencer singing there are plenty of other tracks by The Whitetop Mountain Band on You Tube and on numerous recordings where you can hear her. Take a look around.
My apologies I misread your post. Must cut down on the booze.
@@Backup6Box Did David Bass teach you how to fiddle and dance at the same time? ua-cam.com/video/c3LV12wAZ7A/v-deo.html
Well, UA-cam does know for sure what to recommend me when I am searching hopelessly for "real redneck song".
Beautiful 😂
Long been a favorite, but I must confess, I'm unsure of its meaning. I'll keep listening till I know.
Man (or woman) leaves the old home place. Stays away and out of touch with the folks back home for so long. Returns home to find friends and neighbors have all gone to that beautifull land . i.e: Dead
@Backup6Box ah, thank you. And so in the end, he'll (she'll) see them in Heaven?
You can never go back home.
Great sound U K
A Great Band! And Beautiful Women!

I have been a fiddle teacher for 25 years and would love to know how he got that naural rhythm and tone. Sublime, hats off.

Thank you Mr Baker !
What a song! Get up anddance!!! I got my fiddle!!!
You have the power to make me believe 🤗
Played with Enoch for 37 years. For a little while, Alice hung around and did her best to “discover” Enoch. However it all came to naught. Enoch got what he wanted without her so-called help. The tape she cut was supposed to be a really big hit, but you know how it is when one mixes northern hippie with authentic southern. The mixing was terrible, Alice’s sophomoric playing overpowered everything. Enoch finally got tired of all the crap with Alice and we continued on playing until we were awarded the Library of Congress recognition as the best authentic old time band in the U.S.
Hey Wiley, as someone who isn't from the South you possibly feel that I am not qualified to comment. That may be so. I am sorry if things didn't go right in your and Enoch's relationship with Alice. However I must point out that she did a damn good job in promoting old time music with her magazine which she founded and ran for so long. Sadly just recently it seems to have died. Many of the Northern and Californian folks that came down South did a pretty good job in helping to spread and promote the music and musicians e.g;, John Cohen, Mike Seeger, Ralph Rinzler, Alan Jabbour, Bruce Greene to name a few.. I assumed that as this track was from the Heritage label then Bobby Patterson was responsible for the recording. Is that not so?
Yes Bobby produced that tape. Heck, Alice was ok, but it seemed like she became a pest in latter days. What finally happened was hellacious. Anyway, Alice and Enoch kinda fell out over it all. As a result, the tape never did get much support around here. If you are interested in hearing more of Enoch, I am in the midst of organizing my personal recordings for publication. When I finally get done, I would be glad to send you a copy for postage cost. Thanks for your reply!@@Backup6Box

Oh heck, Alice was Ok, but sure was aggravating. Yes, Bobby produced Old Captain Rabbit and Alice mixed. As was pointed out, the mixing is not so good.
Bob Black on banjo or Jack Hicks?
